Exit Counseling

Federal Direct Loan exit counseling is required for all students who borrow direct loans. Exit counseling provides additional information including your rights and responsibilities as a student loan borrower. Student Academic Records and Financial Services at the University at Buffalo notifies student borrowers via e-mail to complete the exit counseling requirement electronically. The exit counseling notification is e-mailed to students the semester prior to degree conferral, or when students are registered for less than six credit hours, or when students are not registered.

In order for student borrowers to complete the exit counseling requirement, please visit the Web site at https://www.dlssonline.com/borrower/CounselingSessions.do?cmd=initializeContext.

Next, Step 1: Select your loan counseling type. In the box indicating “Exit Counseling,” click on “go” and continue until you have completed the Federal Direct Loan exit counseling. The electronic exit counseling session can take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete.

If you have further questions or concerns about your Federal Direct Stafford Loans, feel free to contact Direct Lending by calling 1-800-848-0979. Additional Direct Loan contact information can be found at the following Web site: https://www.dlssonline.com/borrower/contactUs.do?BORROWER=1.
