Western New York Consortium Cross Registration

The WNY Consortium is an agreement with 22 colleges and universities in Western New York to facilitate the registration of their students in each other's institutions. It is a program applicable to undergraduate, matriculated students who are full-time at their "home" institution.

The State University of New York created the program in 1973 to eliminate the barriers of formal application that prevented students from enrolling in one course at another institution. Students were to be able to enroll on a "space available" basis in the course at the other institution. The consortium agreement directs participating institutions to communicate with the student's "home" institution and to report changes in the student's status and final grades. And it directed that participating students were not to be charged additional tuition for the enrollment at the other institution.

Participation

If you are a UB student and wish to enroll in a course at another WNY Consortium college or university, go to the Student Response Center at Capen 232 to pick up the required form (NOTE: Check to be sure you have the consortium form for cross registration, and not the consortium agreement for financial aid). A Student Response Center representative will verify if you are registered as a full-time, matriculated undergraduate student. The form allows you to visit the other institution on the specific day(s) allotted for cross-registering students (see the link for the Cross Registration Calendar).

When you report to the other institution on the appointed day, they will use the form to create a record for you. If there is space remaining in the course you desire, you will be able to register in the course. At the end of the semester, the grade you earn will be forwarded to UB and added to your transcript.

Non-UB students must report to your home institution's Registrar's Office for details and instructions.

Overview

  • For enrollment at Erie County Community College, you will be asked for proof of permanent residency in NYS for 12 months, and Erie County for 6 months prior to the start of the semester. Out-of-county residents should check with ECC's Bursar's Office for further details.
  • Student Academic Records & Financial Services and the other institution's Registrar's Office will communicate during the semester, and if you become a part-time student at UB as of the end of the second week of classes, we will notify the other institution to immediately bill you the tuition and fees for their course.
  • The other institution might not permit cross-registering students to enroll in certain courses such as computing courses or those with labs; that is their right.
  • If you decide to withdraw from the course at the other institution, you have to follow their rules for drop deadlines. Find out what those dates are when you register!
  • You cannot enroll by cross-registration in courses which are Independent Study, Studio, or other types like this in which you would work 1-to-1 with an instructor.
  • The program only operates in Spring and Fall semesters; for summers, follow the other institution's Summer Session procedures and pay them.
  • See your advisor before you commit yourself to a course at another institution if you plan to use it for credits toward your degree program.
  • Do not cross-register during your final semester at UB because it could delay your degree conferral.

Graduate Students

There are a few SUNY institutions who have agreed to permit some graduate-level cross-registration. These include the University at Buffalo, Buffalo State College, SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Brockport and Geneseo.
